May 2011  Visionary Landscapes: a unique multi-media Hovhaness centennial tribute

On Monday May 16th pianist/composer Hayk Arsenyan (b. 1978) and visual artist Kevork Mourad (b. 1970) continue a collaboration begun in March to celebrate Hovhaness's centennial. As Arsenyan performs Hovhaness on piano, Mourad 'accompanies' with live painting (hand-drawn animation) to bring Hovhaness's music to life visually. This unusual multi-media event has been called "Visionary Landscapes", named after an early piano work of the composer's.

Back in March 2011, the Hovhaness centennial month, the duo gave their highly successful initial performances of this show at Rhode Island's Gallery Z. Both shows were fully sold out. This performance will take place at the Galapagos Art Space (a strictly 21+ venue) on 16 Main Street, Dumbo, Brooklyn. The show starts at 7.30pm sharp.

The duo has future invitations to take this Hovhaness project to several European cities during the centennial year.

The short video below provides a sample of the artists in performance, and features Arsenyan playing part of Hovhaness's 1952 work Fantasy for Piano.
