7/25/07 premiere broadcast for 'Janabar'

On July 25th 2007, at 10am (US eastern time) the WPRB radio show Classical Discoveries, produced and hosted by Marvin Rosen, will give the premiere broadcast of Hovhaness' Janabar (or Journey) for violin, piano, trumpet and strings.

Completed as long ago as Christmas Eve 1950, Janabar is one of the larger Hovhaness concertos from the composer's Armenian period which, until now, has never recieved a commercial recording. It is just one of three works from a forthcoming all-Hovhaness 96kHz|24bit Audio DVD to be released on the OgreOgress label, featuring violinist/violist Christina Fong on all works.

The disc's other works are the viola concerto Talin and yet another Hovhaness world premiere recording ... Shambala, for violin, sitar and orchestra. The latter work was originally composed by Hovhaness for Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar, but was never performed.

Classical Discoveries, which has been on air since 1997, has championed Hovhaness perhaps more than any other broadcast program. Its mission statement is "a radio program devoted to little known repertoire of all musical periods with an emphasis on the old (Baroque and before) and the New Classical Music".
