This disc, recorded in Germany in July 2005, is the third all-Hovhaness release from Naxos. It features first recordings of two late Hovhaness works, 1979's Guitar Concerto No.1 (although the number is not designated on the disc) and Symphony No.60 'To the Appalachian Mountains' from 1985. The opener is an early miniature, the brief but enchanting Khrimian Hairig for trumpet and strings, a more substantial work for these forces than the composer's oft-recorded Prayer of St. Gregory. As with previous Hovhaness Naxos releases, the program was devised by the composer's widow, Hinako Hovhaness, who also provided booklet notes. This is the first Hovhaness recording for Naxos conducted by Gerard Schwarz, previously conductor of several Hovhaness discs on the Delos label. |
