December 2021  Senza Misura: Hovhaness 110th Anniversary Chamber Concert held in Arlington, MA

Cellist Christina Gullans' tribute concert held at Armenian Cultural Foundation.

Early 2020 saw the welcome release of an all-Hovhaness CD titled Across The Ages, featuring little-known or hitherto unrecorded Hovhaness works featuring cello. The driving force behind that disc was Washington, DC-based cellist Christina Gullans. This year, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the composer's birth Ms. Gullans has devised a chamber music concert of the composer's duo and trio works entitled Senza Misura ("Without Measure"), named after the quasi-aleatoric technique Hovhaness often used in his works from the mid-1940s — quite possibly before any other composer!

Hosted by Arlington, MA's Armenian Cultural Foundation, the program of duos and trios for violin, cello and piano was inspired by the natural world and mythologies always close to Hovhaness's heart and the composer's paternal Armenian heritage. Also featured were two works by Armenian women composers. When introducing each piece Ms. Gullans offered contextual insights from her own research into the composer's life and music, following several research trips to Washington DC's Library of Congress. That she is an ardent supporter of Hovhaness's music is in no doubt.

Gullans has previously been praised for her "incredible depth" (Broadway World Review), "haunting sound" (Boston Arts Review), and "exemplary musicianship" (Guy Rickards, Musical Opinion). For this concert she was joined by violinist Courtney Orlando and pianist Christopher Schmitt. The Hovhaness works performed were Cello Sonata Op.255, Trio No.1 Op.3, Varuna Op.264, and Duet for Violin and Cello Op.409.

The other works were Seyran by Komitas Vartabed (1869-1935), musicologist, composer and the founder of the Armenian national school of music, arranged by award-winning and promising composer and pianist Kristina Arakelyan and Piano Trio (1945) by composer and musicologist Gayane Chebotaryan (1918-1998) one of the prominent woman composers of Armenia.

The concert, was held on December 15 at 8pm and can now be viewed here on the YouTube platform.
